Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy, also known as proliferation therapy, is a non-surgical injection treatment designed to stimulate the body's natural healing processes. It aims to strengthen and repair damaged or weakened connective tissues, such as ligaments and tendons, thereby alleviating musculoskeletal pain and improving joint stability.

How Does Prolotherapy Work?

The procedure involves injecting a solution—commonly comprising 15-25% dextrose (a form of glucose) mixed with a local anesthetic—directly into the affected ligaments, tendons, or joint areas. This injection induces mild, controlled inflammation, which triggers the body's immune response to initiate the healing process. Over time, this leads to the formation of new, stronger collagen fibers, reinforcing the structural integrity of the treated tissues

Conditions Treated with Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy has been utilised to address various chronic musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Low Back and Neck Pain: Particularly effective for pain associated with ligament laxity or sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

  • Osteoarthritis: Aims to reduce pain and improve joint function by strengthening the supporting ligaments and tendons.

  • Tendinopathies: Such as rotator cuff injuries, tennis elbow, and Achilles tendinopathy, where it promotes tendon healing and reduces pain.

Treatment Protocol

Before initiating prolotherapy, a thorough assessment is conducted to determine its suitability for the patient. This includes a detailed medical history, physical examination, and, if necessary, imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs..

The treatment typically involves multiple injection sessions, spaced approximately 2-4 weeks apart. The number of sessions varies based on the individual's condition and response to therapy but generally ranges from 3 to 6 treatments. Patients may experience temporary discomfort or swelling at the injection site, which usually subsides within a few days. It's advisable to avoid anti-inflammatory medications during this period, as they may interfere with the intended inflammatory healing response.

Efficacy of Prolotherapy

Clinical studies have demonstrated promising results for prolotherapy in treating chronic musculoskeletal pain. For instance, a randomized trial involving patients with chronic low back pain reported significant reductions in pain and disability following prolotherapy injections. Similarly, research indicates potential benefits in managing osteoarthritis and tendinopathies.

Nutritional Support for Healing

Optimizing nutrition can enhance the healing process after prolotherapy treatment. Key nutrients that support collagen synthesis and tissue repair include:

  • Vitamin C: 1-2 grams per day

  • Zinc: 15-30 mg per day

Collagen and/or protein supplementation can be considered to ensure the body has anough of the essential amino acid building blocks to repair the tissues.

Like all things in life a healthy, balanced diet rich in protein and vegetables, along with these supplements, may improve treatment outcomes.

Is Prolotherapy Right for You?

If you're experiencing chronic musculoskeletal pain unresponsive to conventional treatments, prolotherapy may be a viable option. Consult with a healthcare professional experienced in regenerative injection therapies to determine if prolotherapy aligns with your specific medical needs and to discuss potential risks and benefits
